The Community Foundation is taking a leadership role in helping our region respond to and prepare for disasters.   


Survivors' Fund
In the hours following September 11, 2001, Foundation leaders moved quickly to establish the Survivors’ Fund, which became the largest fund in the country dedicated to supporting the survivors of the Pentagon attack. >MORE


Katrina Open Arms Fund
In 2005, we helped leverage support from our donors and local foundations to establish a fund assisting those affected by hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region, including those evacuated to the Greater Washington community.  >MORE


Greater Washington Taskforce on Nonprofit Emergency Preparedness
The Foundation also convened leaders from philanthropic and nonprofit organizations following 9/11 to examine the sector’s response to the disaster and strengthen its readiness to play a more effective role. This effort helped spur the creation of new investments and partnerships with business and government.  >MORE
