BackgroundThe Survivors’ Fund was established to support the long-term recovery of individuals and families affected by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack at the Pentagon. The goal of the Survivors’ Fund was to help survivors and their families receive the assistance and services they needed to rebuild their lives. More than 12,000 individuals and organizations donated to the Fund, resulting in some $24 million in assets. The Fund partnered with Northern Virginia Family Service to provide case management services and financial support to 1,051 individuals in 517 families. An evaluation of the Survivors’ Fund showed that the Fund had a measurable, positive impact on the lives of the people it served. The study also indicated strong support for its case management model, with 71% of respondents preferring the combination of case management services and financial support provided by the Survivors’ Fund to only financial support.
