Client Profile: Starbucks Memorial Fund
Long-time Washington area residents remember the tragic evening in the summer of 1997 when three Starbucks employees were killed at Starbuck’s upper-Georgetown location. Soon after, the Starbucks Coffee Company established the Starbucks Memorial Fund to support violence prevention and assistance for victims of violence. The Seattle-based company turned to The Community Foundation to manage and administer the Memorial Fund. One Starbucks-funded initiative, the DC Children’s Advocacy Center’s “Safe Shores” program, has helped more than 1,000 child victims of and witnesses to violence.
“Our partnership with The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region allows Starbucks to be confident that our funding is being used to greatest impact in local communities,” attests Lauren Moore, Starbucks’ Director of Giving and Community Affairs. “We know that by leveraging The Community Foundation’s expertise and experience, we can make a greater difference in addressing the issues of victims of violence and violence prevention in the region.”
